After facing a cancer diagnosis and serious challenges to her mental health, Siobhan found herself in one of the most difficult periods of her life. She moved into supported accommodation in a partner homeless housing project – a turning point that led her to discover our community allotment project, and the beginning of a new chapter.
Run by Kevin Walshe, Allotment Project Co-Ordinator, the Cambridge Cyrenians allotment is more than just a beautiful green space. Spread across six full-sized plots, it operates on a therapeutic horticulture model, supporting people who are currently experiencing or have previously faced homelessness.
Here, participants are offered horticultural training, develop forest skills, supported work experience, and, most importantly, a safe and welcoming place to connect and heal.
Siobhan has been attending the community allotment for the past six years. During that time, she’s moved into her own private accommodation, which she proudly describes as a “really gorgeous flat.”
“My psychiatrist said that I’m doing really well. A large part of that is because I’m part of this allotment community. Mentally, it’s extremely good, it’s really helped me,” she says.
Siobhan, like many members of the group, finds the space truly therapeutic:
“While I’m weeding and working here, it’s very freeing. I feel motivated to come… it gives me purpose. The whole thing is very holistic. It’s good for you emotionally, physically, and mentally.”
In addition to attending the allotment sessions, Siobhan has also begun counselling through Cambridge Cyrenians, which she describes as a “massive help.”
The allotment has become a central part of Siobhan’s life, and she hopes to stay involved for as long as possible.
