Supporting wellbeing through nature and community

The Cambridge Cyrenians Allotment Project is a therapeutic community garden for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Cambridge. Run using a therapeutic horticulture model, the project offers a safe, supportive space where people can connect with nature and others, learn new skills and improve their wellbeing through time outdoors.

What the project offers

The allotment provides more than gardening. Participants can access horticulture training, supported work experience and a positive social environment where everyone is treated with respect.The space includes vegetable-growing areas, wildlife habitats, and shared social spaces that encourage connection, learning and creativity.

The garden space

Our allotment includes:

  • Vegetable plots for growing fresh produce
  • A wildlife area with ponds and a small orchard
  • A forest skills zone with a fire pit
  • Wildflower plots and a beekeeping area
  • A large social space known as The Old Barn
  • Tool sheds, a polytunnel and bike storage
  • A creative, beach-themed show garden
  • Solar panels and composting toilets

Why it matters

The allotment supports wellbeing, confidence and recovery by offering:

  • A sense of community and mutual support
  • Reduced stress and improved mental wellbeing
  • Opportunities to grow, cook and eat fresh food
  • New skills, from gardening to forest and wildlife skills
  • Gentle physical activity and routine
  • A stronger connection to nature and the environment

Who can take part

The project is open to:

  • People living in Cambridge Cyrenians accommodation
  • Other local people using homelessness services
  • Anyone who has experienced homelessness in the past

Participants can self-refer, and referrals are also welcomed from other organisations. Sessions are kept small, with around 6–8 participants, to ensure a safe and supportive environment. A no-alcohol policy applies on site, and participants must be able to use tools safely.

How you can support the project

You can support the project in a few ways:

  • Donations can be made direct to Cambridge Cyrenians via JustGiving.
  • Direct and practical help with tools, materials and equipment can be provided through the Good Gifts Catalogue, an initiative of the Charities Advisory Trust.

How to access our services

Access to our services is usually via referral from Cambridge City Council or partner organisations. If you are homeless or at risk of homelessness, the council’s Housing Advice Team is the first point of contact.

Our office is open 9-4.30pm on weekdays. If you are concerned about someone who is homeless or rough sleeping, you can inform the Street Outreach Team via the Streetlink website.

The project runs every Tuesday and Thursday, 10am–1pm, across six full-sized allotment plots in a central Cambridge location.
