This year we've been very lucky to have been donated all of our seeds, from several different organisations.
The organisation Cultivating Change is a seed donation initiative to support mental health, wellbeing and build community through gardening and 'grow your own.'
We received a large box of seeds including salad crops, pumpkins, courgettes and sunflowers. The courgette seeds have gone out in a Sowing Kit to Jo, one of our 'at home' group members to sow and maintain until the risk of frost has passed.
Jo has already reported back that all of the courgette seeds on her window sills have started to sprout!
We have also received a very generous package of seeds from the managers of Kettle Leaf Teas, an artisan tea emporium based in Cambridge.
We will be sowing and planting out these seeds over the next few weeks, including varieties of polytunnel fruit, brassicas and root crops. Some of these crops will be grown for Cambridge Sustainable Food, an organisation in Cambridge that promotes a food system that is good for us and the planet. They run several Food Hubs around Cambridge and are running the 'Grow a Row' project this year where growers are asked to grow a spare row of vegetables to donate to one of the Food Hubs. Check out their website for details of how you can also get involved.
Cambridge University Botanical Gardens have also donated lots of flowering plant seeds.
We have sown these in our bee friendly flower bed next to our hives.
Thanks to all the groups that have kindly donated seeds to our community garden this year. Watch this space as they germinate and grow and produce!
