“I love helping people find their purpose.”
For Millie*, a student mental health nurse, those words sum up her experience during her ten-week placement with Cambridge Cyrenians.
Now six weeks in, Millie has spent time across all our services, gaining a deeper understanding of the support we provide for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Cambridge.
One of the most meaningful parts of her placement has been simply being a listening ear, offering calm, reassurance, and connection to people who are often going through the most difficult moments in their lives.
“It’s been amazing to help people feel heard. That alone can make such a difference.”
She’s found a particular sense of purpose in our community allotment project, especially in the beautiful spring weather, where our garden is truly coming to life!
“It’s absolutely great. Being in nature is therapeutic, fun, and productive. It makes you want to achieve something.”
Millie was also struck by our supported accommodation, particularly the approach taken with our older residents.
“I’ve never heard of somewhere that offers older people accommodation with no pressure to move until they’re ready. It felt safe and secure. You can see that people are comfortable.”
Her time with our Older Homeless Service left a lasting impression too. After accompanying our Mental Health Practitioner, Louisa, on a visit to one individual, she recalls:
“He called us angels! We uplifted him, gave him support, and made him feel valued. I love that Cambridge Cyrenians is here for people in need.”
As her placement continues, Millie is taking away more than just experience, she’s leaving with a renewed sense of purpose, too.
“I’ve loved every minute,” she tells us.

When Grace* lost her home, she didn't know where to turn. After a period in a Refuge Hostel Arrangement, the council referred her to Cambridge Cyrenians, and since July 2025, she has been settled in our supported accommodation, beginning what has become a journey back to herself.
