This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re celebrating Anthony Browne, one of our volunteer counsellors, reaching the milestone of 100 hours of counselling with Cambridge Cyrenians’ residents.
Anthony joined our Mental Health Service in 2022 while working towards his CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body) Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. After completing the qualification Anthony has continued to volunteer with the service, generously offering free face-to-face counselling for several residents who would otherwise not be able to access the same level of support.
Homelessness can often bring with it an increased risk of anxiety, depression, social isolation, and low self-esteem. Homeless Link’s 2016 Health Needs Audit found that 44% of homeless people have a mental health diagnosis, in comparison with 23% of the general population.
The Cambridge Cyrenians Mental Health Service, led by in-house Mental Health Practitioner Louisa Hallisey, supports residents to access and engage with the mental health support they need. Talking to a counsellor like Anthony gives residents a space to talk about problems they are facing, increasing their ability to cope with difficulties, and make positive steps forward.
Louisa Hallisey, Mental Health Practitioner, said: “Anthony’s support has been invaluable. You can so clearly see the beneficial effect of his work with residents and the time and advice he offers to staff. He’s supporting individuals to build resilience, feel empowered, and to better understand themselves. I’m proud to be part of a service where residents can access counselling free of charge with an experienced and fully qualified counsellor.”
