This year we're having a real bumper crop of tomatoes.
We have grown several different varieties including - Beef Steak, San Moranz, Golden Konign, Money Maker, Cherry Cascade.
We have all enjoyed eating them fresh off the vine and taking our harvests home for a wide variety of meals including cheese and tomato toasties; Italian tomato and herb pasta sauce; tomato and chilli savoury pancakes.
We also took several of the varieties to our veggie stall in town a couple of weeks ago and they were extremely popular with the public.
Unfortunately, a lot of other growers haven't been so lucky with their tomatoes this year as the climate has been just right for Tomato Blight, a fungal disease that can devastate tomatoes and related species such as potatoes.
Blight attacks the foliage and fruit or tubers of tomatoes and potatoes, causing rotting. It is most common in wet weather.
The fungal spores of Blight are spread by air so tomatoes and potatoes grown outdoors, especially in flat areas like Cambridgeshire are very susceptible. And the disease can spread across a large allotment site like Whitehill in days.
There are things you can do to protect your crops from Blight:
Good luck with your tomatoes. Hope you're as lucky as we have been so far this season!
