Spring has finally arrived, and after a very wet start tothe year, the weather is slowly beginning to improve. Across the allotment, plants are pushing through, the blossom in our orchard is bursting into bloom, and local wildlife is making a very welcome return. Here's everything we've been up to since our last update.
Sowing, Pricking Out & Polytunnel Progress
We've been busy sowing seeds in our polytunnel and carefully pricking out seedlings as they develop. It’s an exciting sign that the growing season is well and truly underway!
Potatoes, Soft Fruit & the 'Bugs and Bees' Plot
All of our seed potatoes are now in the ground! We've also given our soft fruit area a thorough refurbishment, alongside our dedicated 'Bugs and Bees' plot. This involved lifting the majority of plants, weeding, and replanting the ones we're keeping. A big job, but the results are already looking great.
The Veggie Plot is Taking Shape
Our vegetable plot is coming along brilliantly, with one of our new co-workers stepping up to lead on weeding and digging.
A New Compost Area
Due to growing demand, we've created an additional compost area - another step towards making our allotment as sustainable and self-sufficient as possible.
Deer Fencing Complete & New Supplies In
With our deer fencing project now finished, we've invested the remaining budget into tools, PPE, quality compost, and canes. A huge thank you to Cambridge Home & Garden for their continued support and expert advice!
We Need Your Help - Can You Donate Wood Chippings?
We're currently on the lookout for wood chippings to use on our allotment paths. Supply at the site is very limited right now, and we'd love to hear from anyone who can help.
Whether you're a keen gardener with surplus chippings, a local garden centre, or a business that could make a donation, we'd be incredibly grateful. Please get in touch with our Allotment Co-ordinator, Kevin Walshe, at kevin@cambridgecyrenians.org.uk.
