The sun is shining, the seeds we planted are growing well, and the flowers and blossom trees are in bloom. Spring has officially arrived!
We recently celebrated the Spring Equinox with a revitalising 'sun salutation' yoga session, followed up by making a hearty serving of fresh nettle soup. All ingredients were plucked from our community garden, and we all agreed that it was delicious!
Since our last post...we've done loads!
Winter months - January to March
In the winter months, we cracked on with willow working, laid lots of weed-suppressing cardboard on our pumpkin patch, which was then due to be layered and mulched over the next few months ready to plant out the pumpkins and squash in the early summer. We've also used this time to prep across the garden, with tasks such as cleaning, sharpening and oiling all of our tools, sowing different seeds, whittling posts for the dead hedge, and getting together to discuss great ideas for the year ahead.
We've also been lucky enough to have Rosie along to lead some fantastic workshops. We all, for instance, enjoyed making our own natural balm! One tin will stay at the site - it's the first item in our natural first aid box we've been planning!
The arrival of Spring - March to April
We also tackled our first grass cut of the year just before we greeted the arrival of the first day of Spring. As well as celebrating the Spring Equinox as we mentioned above, we've been cracking on with our Spring tasks! We worked on our beach-themed summer garden, where we fixed up old raised beds, dividing and planting perennials, and of course, we re-hung the hammock! Even Lottie, our allotment cat, got in on the action, enjoying plenty of lap cuddles in the glorious sunshine.
We've also been sowing seeds, and preparing the ground for planting,
Yesterday, we said goodbye to one of our fantastic volunteers who will be moving out of the area. Thanks for your hard work and compassionate involvement with the community group whilst you've been with us. Good luck in your new ventures!
