Six modular homes saved from landfill to give people a place to call home

Six modular homes that were due to be scrapped have been saved from landfill by Cambridge Cyrenians and are being prepared for their first residents. Instead of being wasted, they will give people experiencing homelessness in Cambridge a safe, secure place to live.

We have been hard at work over the last few weeks, giving each modular home a fresh paint, adding in new furniture and white goods, and our new residents are beginning to move in.

More than a roof

Each resident will receive regular visits from our experienced support workers, plus help from our Wellbeing and Independence Services. As with everyone we support, the aim is to help people rebuild their lives and move on to their new future with confidence.

James Martin, Director of Cambridge Cyrenians, said:

“I’m really pleased we have managed to save these homes from being destroyed or lost from Cambridge’s limited housing provision.  The units will provide a valuable step in our resident’s journey from the streets to their own homes.  Being able to provide high-quality self-contained accommodation will allow people to prepare for their final step to independence and away from homelessness for good.”

Our approach

Cambridge Cyrenians has supported people experiencing homelessness in Cambridge since 1970, offering supported accommodation and Wellbeing and Independence Services. This is what that support looks like:

Supported housing – Offering a variety of houses for people experiencing homelessness. Providing stability, dignity and a place to feel at home.

Brighter Futures Mental Health Service - Long-term, specialist support from a qualified mental health professional, working alongside housing to help people build confidence and a more secure future.

Older Homeless Service - Tailored support for people aged 45 and over, helping them move into suitable accommodation or remain safely and stably housed.

Meaningful Activities - Helping people access education, training and volunteering opportunities on their journey towards employment and independence.

Allotment - Open every Tuesday and Thursday across six plots in central Cambridge, giving people a structured space to grow food, build routine and connect with others.

How you can help

Our work depends on the generosity of local people and businesses. If you can, please consider donating to support the residents of our new modular homes: https://www.cambridgecyrenians.org.uk/how-to-help/donate

Thank you.

Graham's story

Graham* could not move on from Cambridge Cyrenians' supported housing for one reason: he had no valid ID. He would have been living on the streets without the help his Cambridge Cyrenians support worker who has been working with him from day one.

Jack's story

Jack* is self-employed, has been in recovery for 14 years, and he has just moved into a new home through HomeLink. It hasn't been a straight road to get there. Jack experienced homelessness once before, alongside substance use. A relationship breakdown a few years ago left him homeless again, and he moved into one of our move-on houses to start rebuilding.

Jake's Story

It only takes one change in circumstances for homelessness to happen. For Jake*, it started with a rotator cuff injury at work. He lost his job, then his home, and found himself sleeping on a park bench in the freezing cold on his first night without one.
