We have a diverse selection of sheds with a variety of functions at our community allotment, from compost loo to wood store to beach hut! So, here's our shed collection in all it's glory :)
Starting of course with our main meeting space - The Barn. The large structure was built by a group of Cambridge University first year Architect students who came to volunteer with us several years ago.
Initially it was built as a working space and it has the tool shed nestling under the rafters.
It's now been repurposed as our main meeting space, where we hold group meetings, workshops and have our tea breaks. And we've extended the seating and planting areas around it.
Our Beach Hut was donated to us as an old black broken down shed when we were planning our Summer themed garden. We based our themed garden on a trip we took to Wells Next-the-Sea in Norfolk. We loved the stripey beach huts so this was our version, surrounded with drought resistant planting, an old surf board and hammock.
The Old Tea Shed is our random storage shed with a second undercover seating/ meeting space. One one side of the structure we have a grape vine trained up the posts and the other side, built from pallets is covered with a large Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) which looks magnificent in Autumn.
Our Forest Skills fire circle and wildlife area has a wood shed where we keep all the fire building and craft equipment and wood pile.
A few years ago, one of the group members suggested that we needed a bike shed as several of us cycle to the community allotment. So, as usual we thought - Pallets! And here's the result...
Last but definitely not least, our compost toilet shed! We built the toilet to our own designs. It has two cubicles with a trench running underneath both. We alternate the use of the cubicles to give the compost chance to rot down. The non-toilet cubicle is useful as a storage space which is currently used as a paint store. We were lucky to have a local artist volunteer to come and paint the toilet block shed for us. We love it!
