To celebrate National Allotments Week this year we held a pop up stall in Cambridge city centre.
Allotments Week began in 2002, devised by the National Allotment Society as a way of raising awareness of allotments and the role they play in helping people to live healthier lifestyles, grow their own food, develop friendships and bolster communities. We definitely agree with all these benefits and celebrate the campaign week annually.
So, this morning we harvested, prepared and packed lots of our lovely fresh fruit and veg, including runner beans, chard, kale, 4 varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, jalapenos, onions and blackberries.
We set up our stall in our usual space on Christ's Pieces near the bus station in Cambridge city centre.
There was lots of interest from the public who came over to talk to the group members about our community allotment project, sample our produce and make donations.
As the National Allotment Society mention, growing your own fruit and veg supports a healthy lifestyle and an important part of our community project is to share and eat our own produce. Luckily, there was just enough fruit and veg left over for the group members to share out at the end of the day. We discussed our recipe ideas which included Gambian Stew, kale curry and cucumber salad.
The next few months are harvest months at the allotments so we will be running more fruit and veg stalls in town, not forgetting our annual fancy dress Halloween Pumpkin stall which is not to be missed!
