This year seems to be flying by, and our allotment co-working group have achieved so much in the months since our last blog post! Here's a taster of what we've been up to.
As we wrapped up summer and headed into Autumn, our group have been busy tidying up and getting things ready for the next part of the year from September to now. This included:
On the 21st October, we enjoyed a group trip to Darwin Nurseries. We made the most of the autumn sunshine with a walk around the gardens, stopped for a well-earned hot drink, and even managed to spot some of the animals, including a few friendly rabbits!
It was a lovely afternoon spent connecting, getting some ideas for our next planting session, and exploring somewhere new together.
Last week, we had Peter from Cambridge Honeybees stop by to have a look at our currently abandoned hives. Good news - they're not a totally lost cause...we are hoping the bees will be back by the Spring with support from Cambridge Honeybees! 🐝
We enjoyed a fantastic Halloween bash as a group at our allotment on the 30th October, which involved pumpkin carving (using our very own-grown pumpkins), and enjoyed each others company around the fire pit. Even Lottie, our allotment cat, got involved in the festivities, looking after our crates of pumpkins, and sitting close as we carved them!
Today, we are planning our next cook-out today to celebrate Bonfire Night. We'll be cooking up lots of tuna and veggie pasta and hot drinks, now that we have our new camping stove to use. We're all looking forward to this!
We also have plenty more tidying and projects to do this time of year - keep an eye out for our next bi-monthly update on our blog, and make sure to follow us on Instagram for more regular weekly updates - @our_community_allotment.
We run the seasonal gardening and forest skill sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays on 6 allotment plots at the Whitehill Allotment site, off Newmarket Road.
Our small groups are usually made up of about 6 to 10 people on both days. If you would like to talk to our coordinator about joining the groups, please get in contact or speak to your project worker about it, and we can arrange to meet you.
