These figures are more than numbers - they represent lives without safety, stability or support. And they demonstrate clearly why organisations like Cambridge Cyrenians are more vital than ever.
In 2026, Cambridge Cyrenians marks 56 years of supporting people experiencing homelessness. What began as a small volunteer-led initiative in 1970 has grown into a respected local Cambridgeshire charity, providing safe, stable homes and specialist support in the city. Over the years, the charity has evolved to meet changing needs while maintaining its core belief that everyone deserves a safe place to call home.
Today, Cambridge Cyrenians provides supported accommodation and specialist services that are designed to build confidence, independence and a sense of community. The charity supports over 200 people across Cambridge, offering homes as well a tailored mental health service, a therapeutic community allotment, specialist support for older individuals in the Older Homeless Service, and practical support to help people rebuild their lives.
James Martin, Director at Cambridge Cyrenians, said:
“These figures are a stark reminder that homelessness in the United Kingdom continues to rise. Behind every statistic is a person without safety, stability and a place to call home. As we mark 56 years of supporting people in Cambridge, we know more than ever that early intervention and support changes lives. But we cannot do this work alone. The need of charities like Cambridge Cyrenians in our community has never been greater, and neither has the importance of local people choosing to stand alongside those who have nowhere else to turn.”
Cambridge Cyrenians can provide support to people experiencing homelessness thanks to the kindness of the local community.
Whether through donations, fundraising or corporate partnerships, local support enables the charity to provide safety, stability and hope at a time when the need has never been greater.
